EM 385-1-1, 2024 Edition (15 March 2024) · ENG Form 6293
Learn to prepare an Accident Prevention Plan that a USACE or NAVFAC project will accept — the work, the site-specific plans it requires, the people, the safety program and the appendices — and prove it by completing an APP worksheet that gets read and graded by the instructor.
Why this course exists
EM 385-1-1, paragraph 2-7.b: “No contract work can begin without a KO or COR accepted APP.”
EM 385-1-1 (15 March 2024) requires ENG Form 6293 — thirteen parts and six appendices. A reviewer reads it part by part, and every part has to say something about this project.
Sixty-six rows of site-specific plans, each needing an option and a justification. “Not applicable” down the side of the page tells the reviewer nothing.
Every plan attached and every person named should trace back to a line in the work inventory. Write the APP from the scope of work outward, not from Part 1 downward.
The assignment is your own project. You complete the APP worksheet for a project you have worked on or are working on now, so you finish the course with a worksheet you can actually use.
Who it is for
No prior EM 385-1-1 experience is assumed. The second module teaches you to navigate the manual from scratch.
Who prepare the APP and submit it for acceptance.
Who run the work the APP describes.
Who keep the APP current for the life of the project.
Who review and approve it before it goes to the Government.
Learning outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
Curriculum
Each instructional module ends with a ten-question quiz. The assignment is graded by the instructor.
How the course runs
What the course covers and what it asks of you, how the platform works, what to download, how the pop-up checkpoints and module quizzes behave, and what you have to finish to earn the certificate.
Finding what you need in the manual
All thirty-seven chapters run the same ten numbered sections, so learning one chapter teaches you all of them. Paragraph 7 of every chapter is Minimum Plan Requirements — the paragraph every row of Part 11 points to.
Hazard families · hierarchy of controls · injury sources
The five core hazard families, the hierarchy of controls in order of decreasing effectiveness, and the twelve injury-source codes — Struck By, Caught Between, Fall to Below and the rest — with a worked example for each.
The core of the course
Define the work, select the plans, name the people, set the program, assemble and approve, keep it current. Each step is taught, then applied to one project: My Repair Garage, a 4,000 square foot concrete masonry maintenance facility, shown part by part on the actual ENG Form 6293.
Part 11 is worked row by row — Option 1, 2 or 3 — with every selected plan traced back to the work that requires it.
Graded by the instructor · pass or revise
You complete ENG Form 6293 — all thirteen parts — for a project you know, using the six-step method. You mark in Part 13 which appendices your APP would carry; you do not have to write the plans themselves.
It is read against eight checks and returned within two business days. There is no percentage — it either meets the standard or it comes back with the reasons, and you revise and re-upload.
Assessment
Three layers. Each one establishes something the others do not.
| Layer | What it is | To pass |
|---|---|---|
| Module quizzes | Ten multiple-choice questions at the end of each instructional module, one correct answer each. Every learner answers all ten. | 70% — seven of ten. Two attempts, then the module resets and you work through it again. |
| The APP worksheet you prepare | ENG Form 6293 for your own project, read by the instructor against eight checks. | Pass or revise. Two business days’ turnaround, up to three rounds. |
| Final examination | Ten multiple-choice questions drawn at random from the module question pool. Twenty-minute limit. | 70%. Two attempts. |
There are also short pop-up checkpoints inside each video. If a checkpoint is not answered within a minute the video returns to the last bookmark, so the course only advances when someone is actually watching.
To finish the course you pass every module quiz, submit an acceptable APP worksheet, pass the final examination, complete the course evaluation and the attestation statement, and then download your Certificate of Completion.

No. The assignment is the APP worksheet, ENG Form 6293. You select the plans your project needs in Part 11 and mark in Part 13 which appendices your APP would carry. The complete My Repair Garage APP shows you what the plans themselves look like.
You receive an email naming exactly what needs to change. You revise and re-upload. Up to three rounds are available.
You have two attempts. If you do not pass in two, your progress resets to the start of that module and the quiz reopens once you have worked through it again.
